One night, I had a dream about an undercover adult show featuring a young girl and her best friend saving the school. The main character was obviously a girl, but her friend’s gender was confusing. The friend was initially a boy in the first couple of episodes, but later on, I found out he was also a girl.
The two appeared to be the youngest in their class, roughly 13 or 14, the rest of the students being 15-17. The show was named after a Staff Member who was played by a popular voice actor, while the rest of the characters were played by my friends and I. There was a cat-like girl that the main character harbored feelings for, but I couldn’t recall the other’s appearances.
We know that dreams can and will be unusual at times. Usually, we also don’t remember dreams well. I do recall a dream I had years ago, which was mostly about our house being covered in spider webs and a variety of different large insects. I used to be afraid of large bugs like beetles, crane flies, and wasps. As this example shows, some dreams are tied to fear or sensitivity.
When my mom told me about analyzing dreams, I found out that there are millions of different ‘symbols’ to interpret. Falling in your dreams symbolizes the loss of control or insecurity, or fear regarding a situation in waking life. Being chased can mean avoidance of a person, emotion, or threatening situation. Flying usually represents the desire for freedom or a new perspective. Teeth falling out is associated with feelings of anxiety or vulnerability. These symbols and their associated meanings reveal things about you as a person and how your dreams define your mental state.
Typically, it’s easy to forget dreams because during REM sleep, the brain is inactive. This prevents the transfer of short-term dream memories into long-term storage. Additionally, low levels of necessary neurochemicals like norepinephrine, active “forgetting” by brain cells, and immediate distractions upon waking cause memories to fade rapidly. So while we don’t often remember dreams, when we do, it can be useful to find symbols.
