Different Options After High School

College isn’t the only way!

There are many different options after high school when it comes to a student’s future, and The Chomp would like to highlight some of them! Gateway is blessed with a wonderful Gateway 2 Careers program that has helped kids find what they want to do and get their foot in the door for nearly 10 years!

We talked to Mr. Joyce, who helps run the Gateway 2 Careers program, to learn about different training and service opportunities.

The most traditional option is 4-year college right after high school. This is a great option for people who know what they want to do and need an education as a prerequisite. The scope of majors and training you could receive at a 4-year University is seemingly endless.

Two-year technical school can also be a great option for many students. There are many different programs focused on hands-on training such as welding, cars, construction, etc. Gateway 2 Careers has a partnership with Orleans Technical College allowing seniors to take classes there half the day. Some other training programs are cosmetology, hair, esthetician, ultrasound tech, and realtor although those often have different timelines. These programs are highly specialized and are great for kids who love working with their hands and have a good idea of what they want to do.

The military has a whole host of options within it. Aside from the traditional service, there are many different sides of the military. Many people interested in going into the military take The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) which measures your abilities and knowledge in a wide range of subjects. Depending on your score you could work in robots, cooking, or environmental control.

If you aren’t quite sure what you want to do after high school or you just want to get a variety of experiences, Americorps could be a good option. It is a federal agency focusing on volunteering and national service. They have programs all over the country with a ton of different working opportunities.

Mr. Joyce did Americorps after college in California and found it very valuable in getting new experiences and training. It gave him some time to figure out what he wanted to do while still working.

Mr. Joyce’s final piece of advice was to explore all your options in high school and apply to Gateway 2 Careers. Gateway offers a bunch of different classes and clubs for a small school. If you want to find out more about career options or Gateway 2 Careers please contact either Mr. Joyce or Mrs. Eckstein!

There are many more options that weren’t mentioned, and if you would like to find out more don’t hesitate to get in touch with Mr. Joyce at [email protected] or stop by Room 217.
