Spring is just around the corner! With spring comes warmer weather, baby animals, and beautiful scenery. However, with the excitement of the beauty of spring, there’s also a responsibility. We’re responsible for the world around us.

With plants growing back, it’s partially on us to keep them alive and beautiful. You can’t enjoy the beauty without doing anything to help it stay beautiful. It may seem like it’s a big job to take on, but little by little – we can all chip in to maintain the beauty of spring.

When sophomore Abria Joshua was asked what her favorite part of spring is, she said, “I love the time in between winter and summer where it’s not too hot but it isn’t too cold. I also adore how pretty nature gets during this time.”

To follow up with my previous question, I proceeded to ask her what she does to help make sure she’s being environmentally friendly.

She replied, “I always make sure I purchase environmentally friendly substitutes for commonly harmful products. Following that, I also make sure I’m very cautious with how much I’m purchasing to make sure I am not overconsuming. Then, of course – as everyone should – I always recycle.”

When consuming things, think about how it is affecting the earth we know and love. Try not to buy too many products, and when you do, try to make sure they aren’t harmful to animals or the environment.

If you can, try volunteering in your neighborhood for your local garden or events like trash clean-ups. Even if you don’t volunteer, you could also just walk around your town and pick up trash that is left around. If you have room, you could always start your own garden as well.

Even if you’re not currently working towards helping the planet, you could always start with simple steps.

Freshman Desmond McCue joins the conversation here, in which he says, “I recycle but lately I’ve been feeling like that isn’t enough. I’m starting to be more cautious with how I treat the earth. I’m trying not to waste, and I’m making sure I don’t waste any food.”

Just like Desmond, you too can start taking simple steps to help the earth we live on.

This year, think about the steps you are taking to protect the joy of spring. You don’t have to be perfect with it, just take it one action at a time.

One person can’t do everything, but if lots of people do small things, together we can keep the world beautiful. We only have one earth, and it’s ours to protect. It’s our responsibility to maintain the life we enjoy and to help restore it to its original beauty.
