Current Gateway Students and Alumni Share Memories of Beloved Art Teacher

Last week, the Gateway community lost a beloved Art teacher, Ms. Jamie O’Neill. Gateway to Careers’ Melissa Eckstein enlisted the help of both former and current students to collect tributes to her legacy. Student staff writer, Allison Eckstein, created this beautiful infographic to share those student memories with the greater Gateway community.

O’Neill was a true warrior, and her magic weapons were paint brushes and encouraging words, both which fostered a trusting and loving environment for those in her charge.

As an example of how O’Neill touched the lives of students, Melissa Eckstein, Allison’s mom, shared, “Allison never listened to me that she was good at art; however, Ms. O’Neill’s superpower was in encouraging the most sensitive students with wicked creativity, which made them feel comfortable sharing who they were through their artwork.”

We call on our Gateway community to help us honor a true Gator. I’m Allison, and I am a junior at Gateway. I’m passionate about all things artsy, and I know how to play the guitar. I am also a member of the Gateway Theater Department. When I'm not being a theater nerd, I’m on the tennis court.

Laurel Rose Barrett, Co-Editor-in-Chief

I'm Laurel Barrett, and I am in my third year as the Editor-in-Chief of The Chomp! This year I am Co-Chief with Kalise! I am currently a senior, and my favorite subjects are English, AP Calc, & History. My hobbies are reading, writing, and creating artistic projects, like posters and models. I am a lawyer in Mock Trial, a President of Book Club, and I've been a NJ-JCL Executive Board Officer for 3 years. I'm also a member of Latin Club and NHS & World Language Honors Societies. Additionally, I run The Chomp's Facebook account, and I've been the social media manager of a NJ non-profit called P.U.R.E. Girls, Inc. and enjoy volunteering at Angels Community Outreach when I can. I plan to become a lawyer in the future and practice somewhere in New England. I look forward to interviewing featured teachers, covering Features, writing opinion pieces, and creating book reviews for The Chomp this year!
