Before Halloween Gateway puts on its annual Halloween dance! This year everyone was really competitive, pulling up in their best costumes. It was a 10 dollar entry ticket, and food was sold separately. Spirit club had stayed after school earlier that day to decorate, so they deserve a huge thank you.
Gateway’s Halloween dance is an event strictly for 7-8th grade, with the exception of chaperons, who were also dressed up. The money raised goes to the 8th graders trip sometime in the spring and other miscellaneous things. It’s also used to raise school spirit and give the students something to look forward to.
“I loved the costume contest and getting to be with my friends!” – Claire Wagman, a 7th grader at Gateway
“There were some really unique costumes this year, it was super fun!” – Ash DiVento
Let’s get to the main event, the costume contest. There were 5 different categories, Most original, Best group, Wildcard, Scariest, and best overall. Deanna, an 8th grader, won most original. Willow, Savannah, and Kinleigh, all 8th graders, won best group. Antonio, a 8th grader, won wild card. Silas, a 7th grader, won scariest. And lastly, Rebecca, an 8th grader, won best overall. They also added wild cards because normally the best group is awarded to four people, though since this year it was three, they needed an extra winner to claim the last gift card.
Mr. Raba was also handing out goodie bags filled with candy to people. He was blowing his whistle and red carding students before one of his helpers gave them candy. The dance ended shortly after the costume contest, with everyone leaving through the gymnasium doors. Overall, this year’s dance was a huge success, and hopefully, next year will be too.
