A poem: The Beauty of Humanity

This poem is a reflection on how humans perceive beauty, pain and suffering and how it’s all part of the human experience.

The artist Frida Kahlo painted many self portraits throughout her life. She highlighted her uni-brow in every single one. A quote from her is, "I won't curb my self-expression to meet your expectations of how a woman should look." Her art resonates with me. She defined beauty stands and stuck with her own morals. This painting above titled, "Self-Portrait with Monkey," is one of my favorite works of her.

Friends come and go

Like passing ships in the night.

That seems to be true in every life

Everyone feels loneliness

It’s the Inevitable waterfall of emotions

Everyone has to experience

In order to feel human

Being human is being a rose

So many colors come with so much beauty

Yet can be so painful even the heavens cry out

When the heavens weep from this pain

So does the world

That’s why we have all these painful things

It’s what makes the world beautiful

Being human is being beautiful

Even through the pain

Nature does the same

Waterfalls cry out every day when they hit the rocks

But even then their sparkle shines through when the sun hits just right

When the trees break their backs to elegantly dance in the wind

Showing us their passion even as they lose their beloved leaves

During the night the shadows dance

Welcoming the darkness once again

The sun will always rise in the morning

Scaring them off

But the darkness will always come back

This never-ending cycle is a mirror

One of a human’s life if you look close enough

You can find pain and beauty in this never-ending cycle

From the grace of the moon to the searing pain of the sun

Light and dark will always shine through
