Gateway’s New Drone and Aviation Course

Students in Aviation taking drones for a test-fly!

Students in Aviation taking drones for a test-fly!

Mr. Pridy and Mrs. Broadbelt have started their new course here at Gateway, STEM Drone and Aviation. The course is to prepare students to take the FAA Part 107 Content Knowledge Test at the end of the year. Passing the test allows students to gain a Remote Pilot Certification and be able to fly a drone and receive compensation.

Students who take the class will find that it can be challenging, but so much fun! The class tries to go outside to fly a drone at least once a week. As someone who is in the class, I have not been able to fly a drone yet, but those who have had the privilege enjoyed it a lot.

Both Mr. Pridy and Mrs. Broadbelt gained their Remote Pilot Certification in 2022 and decided that it would be fun to teach students about drones, hoping to allow them to eventually gain their own Remote Pilot Certification. Gaining a Remote Pilot Certification opens the door to a lot of different career paths. Drones are incorporated into the military, real estate, photography, archeology, filmmaking, and many other fields. Remote pilots also gain a lot of money, regardless of what career path they take.

A great day for drone flying! (Deb Broadbelt and Guy Pridy)

If you are interested in flying a drone recreationally, you can gain a Recreational Certification through the TRUST website. This would only allow you to fly for fun, not for volunteering or for compensation. If you are interested in using drones for volunteering or for compensation, then you should consider taking the class to prepare to take the Part 107 Content Knowledge Test.
