Every year, Gateway names one teacher “Teacher of the Year. This year the winner was the very deserving Mrs. Genzano. Mrs. Genzano goes above and beyond – not only to ensure her teaching is the best it can be, but also by putting her passion into many extracurriculars and building bonds with her students. Whether you’re in one of her classes or an extracurricular she runs, the effort she puts in is evident.

Mrs. Genzano is a Special Education English teacher and has been working here at Gateway for all 22 years of her profession. Aside from teaching, she runs the Student Council with Mrs. Evans and is also one of the cheer coaches.

Teaching was always her first choice when it came to future professions. Why? The answer is simple–she loves the community, but there was another factor that helped her decide.

“The schedule,”she shared, “I thought working from September to June from 8-3 was a sweet deal and perfect for when I had kids of my own. Little did I know that I would get so involved at Gateway that I would be here well past 3 and on weekends and in the summer coaching and running activities.”

Year after year, she brings new activities to enhance the learning experience for those she teaches. This year, her favorite activity lies within her 9th-grade class. She has the students retell the infamous balcony scene from the play Romeo and Juliet, as a comic strip!

How did she feel when she was awarded Teacher of the Year?

“I was really excited and shocked that it finally happened.” She shared, “To be acknowledged by the administration, staff, and especially the students for the work we do as teachers is an honor.”

Hard work pays off, which is showcased here. Mrs. Genzano’s efforts and passions in her job were recognized, after years of continuous dedication to those she teaches and interacts with. Congratulations Mrs. Genzano! You deserve it!
