I began my journey in martial arts back in the mid-1990s in California. I would get up early in the morning and take a karate class two days a week and earn one of the lowest ranks of yellow belt. I admit I didn’t stick with it as I moved, started graduate school, and began my full-time career. Fast forward many years later, and I would have an unexpected reunion with the martial arts.
It was the spring of 2020 and the Covid 19 pandemic trapped me in my home with my 6-year-old daughter who was full of energy with no outlet for her enthusiasm and no place to go. I began searching frantically for some way to help her deal with the unknown and the fear and stress caused by the lockdown. Fortunately, martial arts came back into my life when my wife found an advertisement from Action Karate which was offering classes online on Zoom. My daughter would sign up and begin her black belt journey and inspire me to finish what I started many years ago.
I have been training for about three years now and can say it helped transform my life in many ways. Karate has given me structure and helped me to develop self-discipline. It has pushed me to build my physical strength and challenged my mental toughness. I enjoy being surrounded by positive people both instructors and fellow students who model integrity and commitment to excellence. Karate is great for people of all ages, genders, races, and creeds. My daughter is now 10 years old and earned her junior black belt in June, and I am now 50 years old and will test for my black belt in December.
