World Teen Mental Wellness Day was created to spread awareness about mental health disorders, and with mental health challenges on the rise, this day is important. Many teens and young adults suffer from a mental illness, and it’s important for people to understand how it works and how to help.
World Teen Wellness Day is celebrated every year on March 2nd. It was created by the clothing chain Hollister as part of their Hollister Confidence Project. It’s meant to spread awareness about teens suffering from mental health issues and give help to those that need it.
Having a mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, many people have one. In fact 1 in 6 teens will experience a mental health condition, and about 50% of mental conditions start before the age of 14. If you struggle with a mental health issue, there are many people you could talk to, including your school counselor.
Mrs. Clark, one of Gateway’s high school counselors, has some advice:
“Taking care of your mental health and wellness is similar to nourishing your body with healthy choices. Just as nutritious food fuels your body, making mindful decisions for your emotional well-being strengthens your mental health. For teens struggling with mental health, it’s important to prioritize healthy social relationships—set boundaries and surround yourself with supportive people who lift you up.”

Surrounding yourself with people who care will increase your mental wellness. Spending time with your friends, and even seeking help are all ways to help with your mental conditions. It’s always important to remember that you being happy is the most important thing. Mrs. Clark also gave some ways to help.
“Your counselor at Gateway is always a great resource, and if you need help outside of school, you can reach out anonymously 24/7 by texting or calling 1.888.222.2228 (https://www.2ndfloor.org/). Just as you wouldn’t ignore your body’s needs, don’t neglect your mental health.”
Having mental stability is important, so spend your time doing things you like with people you like.
