Every March, the United States celebrates a national holiday called Women’s History Month. On this holiday, Americans honor the contributions women have made in society as well as their impact on the world. Citizens celebrate by recognizing women’s contributions and encouraging others to self-educate on the matter so that the innovations created by a woman are never forgotten.
About Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month began as a week-long holiday created by The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission in Santa Rosa, California, 1978. By 1980, the holiday had become popular across the country and was fought for official national recognition, where it would then be recognized by President Jimmy Carter in February of the same year.
This became a tradition among the presidents that followed until Congress officially designated March as Women’s History Month in 1987. Since then, Women’s History Month has received an annual proclamation from each president and continues to grow as a holiday to this very day.
“Women have made countless positive contributions to society, many of which go unrecognized. It’s also important to recognize that not all strong women are loud and outspoken. Many women work behind the scenes in a quiet and unassuming way, but their mark in this world is incredible,” says Kathleen Bially, Gateway Regional’s favorite librarian.

Recognizing a Woman’s Contribution to Society
It’s important to know that the activists who fought for equal rights didn’t get to where they are today with ease, and that they had to endure all sorts of endeavors in order for the message of equality to spread across the globe. It’s a sad reality that something as simple as liberation for all had to be fought for, especially when it is still an ongoing battle.
That’s why it’s important to never forget the cause that started the fight for equality, otherwise, it allows the abuse women and other minorities face to go unnoticed and face little to no consequences at all. By celebrating the holidays that honor the hardships these groups endured, it sends a message to the world that no one has forgotten Earth’s dark history, and that society wants a change for the better.
Not only that, but it shows women that their cries for justice have been taken into consideration. To be seen is to be heard, and that is something these women long for as they continue to fight for their rights. While they are already strong on their own, knowing that others are there for them and ready to support them in any way possible makes them feel stronger. It also makes them emotional because it suggests that they are not alone anymore.
“I think it’s important to recognize Women’s History Month to inspire future generations. When we talk about accomplishments made by women in various fields, it enables younger generations to pursue their passions and interests,” explained Erika Busch, a middle school teacher from Gateway Regional High School.
She finishes by stating, “When we have examples of strong women leaders, those goals seem much more attainable to a young girl.”

Epilogue
Empowerful women like Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, and so much more paved the way for women’s rights and the message that women are just as powerful as the average man and can do anything their hearts desire. Although misogyny is still a prevalent subject and the crimes against women continue to grow, Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day remains a strong beacon of hope that somewhere in the future, women will be given the same equal treatment that men receive.
“Women’s History Month is important because it gives us a chance to recognize and celebrate the many achievements of women throughout history. It helps us remember that women have made significant contributions in every field, including math, science, politics, art, and so much more,” shared Brooke Gilliano, a mathematics teacher also from Gateway Regional High School.
“It also reminds us that gender equality is still something we need to keep working toward, so that everyone has the same opportunities to succeed, regardless of gender,” she continued.
Women are the definition of beauty and wits, and their perseverance is strong enough to overcome any obstacle that gets in their way. They are an inspiration to many young girls, especially to those who want to live a life full of opportunities and equality. Women are capable of anything, and Women’s History Month is proof of that.
