This year’s Super Bowl was a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, (57) pitting the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs. Both teams were dominant this year, with the Chiefs going 15-2 and the Eagles going 14-3 on their way to the Super Bowl. The Chiefs this year were led by stars Patrick Mahomes and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, AKA Travis Kelce, along with their excellent defense. The Eagles were also led by two offensive stars, Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts, and a great defense. And just like Super Bowl LVII, many believed the game would be a close affair coming down to the final minutes, or even seconds.
First Quarter: The game started out with the Eagles getting the ball before they proceeded to go three and out. The Chiefs then punted and after a few chunk plays by the Eagles, Jalen Hurts “tush pushed” his way into the endzone from the one-yard line, putting the Eagles up 7-0.
Second Quarter: After another Chiefs punt, the Eagles went down and Jake Elliott kicked a 48-yard field goal, increasing the lead to 10-0. Then right after, birthday boy Cooper Dejean got a pick six, further increasing the Eagles lead to 17-0. After a second Mahomes interception, this time being caught by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun, the Eagles quickly scored again via an A.J Brown 12-yard touchdown catch to put the Eagles up 24-0 at the half.
Third Quarter: After a halftime show performance headlined by Kendrick Lamar and SZA, the Chiefs got the ball. However they did nothing with it and the Eagles drove down the field resulting in Jake Elliott hitting a 29-yard field goal for 27-0 lead. Then after another Chiefs punt, Jalen Hurts threw a bomb to DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown for a 34-0 lead. Finally, the Chiefs did something as they drove down the field and Xavier Worthy caught a 24-yard touchdown to cut the massive lead down to a slightly less large lead of 34-6 after a failed two point conversion.
Fourth Quarter: The Eagles then drove down and Jake Elliott hit his second 48-yard field goal of the game for a 37-6 lead. After a strip sack by Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams, Jake Elliott hit yet another field goal, his fourth and longest, at 50 yards, to put the Eagles up 40-6. With a little under 3 minutes left, DeAndre Hopkins caught a 7-yard touchdown and after a successful two point conversion, the Chiefs cut the lead to 40-14. Just over a minute later, Mahomes threw a 50-yard bomb to Xavier Worthy to cut the lead to 40-22 with another successful two point conversion. The Eagles then ran out the clock, taking home their second Lombardi trophy.
“This is the ultimate team game. You can’t be great without the greatness of others. Great performance by everybody – offense, defense, special teams,” said Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, perfectly describing the full team effort it took to dominate the game.
Despite the fact the Eagles played extremely well as a whole and there was no true MVP, someone still had to be crowned. The recipient of that crown was Jalen Hurts, cementing his legacy as true franchise quarterback for the Eagles and the only franchise quarterback in Eagles history to win a Superbowl. He also proved that he, and the Eagles, could take down the big bad empire in the Kansas City Chiefs.
Go Birds!!!
