Sticking With Our Resolutions

Why do so many people give up on their New Year’s Resolutions?

The end of 2024 marks the start of a clean-slate: 2025. What better time to throw yourself some resolutions than right at the start of the New Year?

Most people are familiar with what a New Year’s resolution is. They are inspiring goals that people assign themselves in the start of January, in hopes the New Year motivation will help them stay. Common resolutions include getting good grades, eating healthy, or trying new things!

An issue with resolutions is that some people make overzealous ones that probably won’t happen. While it’s fun to set fresh new goals to make ourselves better, how many people actually stick to their resolution?

Fisher College of Business reports, “Researchers suggest that only 9% of Americans that make resolutions complete them,” the report continues, “In fact, research goes on to show that 23% of people quit their resolution by the end of the first week.”

This is an impressive statistic, but why do so many people quit their resolutions? It might be because people make their resolutions too big. Sometimes the saying, “new year, new me,” doesn’t mean you have to change you. If we make our goals reachable, we may be able to achieve something, or at least not quit in the very first week.

An example is getting all A’s this marking period. If someone has low grades they might want to bring them up. But, you’re not magically just going to get good grades.

So an easier resolution could be studying more, or doing extra credit. This is easily achievable, and it will help with your end goal. Setting goals that are not too overwhelming will help maintain them in the long run.

Another reason people might not complete their resolutions is because they don’t know how to stick to them. One goal like that could be trying to be healthier. Well, how are you going to achieve that? Some people might not know how to start, so just start small. You can take a walk everyday, or try to make healthier meals.

So lets start of 2025 with a new goal, or resolution, in mind. We should keep our resolutions simple, and to the point. We want to be able to complete them, not leave them behind. This is a time for a fresh start, and time for people to set goals. So, for 2025, let’s set some realistic resolutions, and try to make it past the first week.
