A new school year means many things: new teachers, new friends, getting older, and a new beginning. However, to many it’s a very stressful time of year. It’s hard to keep everything organized with new information about different classes coming in rapidly. While meeting new teachers and classmates is thrilling to some, it’s an anxiety inducing task. The best way to keep your stress under control is being as organized as possible and having something to look at that spells out what to do in certain school-related situations.
For this, there’s a couple different categories. First – writing down your schedule, teachers, and room numbers. While later in the year this may be pointless, during the beginning of the year having it all laid out is a sufficient way to memorize your schedule for the year. Below, there’s an example of what it could look like:
Furthermore, having a study and work/extracurricular schedule is also extremely helpful to staying organized. During the start of the year, it can be just a loose outline as you don’t know exactly what that class entails yet. Then, as you learn more about the class and how much work you’ll be doing – you can edit it to be more specific.
For an idea, here is a brief outline of what each class/type of assignment could have briefly written:
Homework:
- Complete all work the night it’s assigned, if possible
- If you’re confused or struggling, reach out to your teacher with questions
- Turn the assignment in on time
Written Pieces:
- Try to get the most useful information. At least four resource options. Don’t use Wikipedia! Use reliable sources only. Think of the assignment as something you’d read. What would you want to know about said topic?
Book projects:
- Make sure you know the book. Try explaining the book to someone else–that’ll show how much you know, and what you need to memorize.
Quizzes and Tests:
Review materials the night before, and the night before that, review until memorized. To make sure it’s memorized, try to write it down from memory. If you really wanna make sure you’ve memorized the material, try to teach it to someone else to see what you remember and what you need to focus on more. –
This year may be more difficult for some than others for various reasons, but hopefully with these tips – your year goes by a little more smoothly. These years are stressful and sometimes hard, but knowing how to successfully manage your time and how to study can create more time for making those high school memories we all want.
