We were two strangers

intertwined by fate

connected with a small pink string

on each of our pinkie fingers.

We knew someday we

would find each other, whether

by search, or luck, or circumstance.

We never knew which, though.

And each day, that hope

to find you would grow.

I never knew you.

I didn’t know the first thing about your life.

But I knew you and I would be special.

For that string brought us together,

for that string called us ‘soulmates’.

I would lay awake each night,

staring at my hand, the cord coming from it,

and wonder about our first meeting.

Maybe it would be at a party, or some kind of bustling event.

Maybe we’d be passersby on a busy street who happened

to hold the door for each other.

Just maybe, though, it could be small.

Small like a seating chart.

Small like quiet whispers of introduction 

exchanged for the first time.

Small, like a soft smile.

I always knew you entering my life would change it.

When I found the other tie to

that pink string, our search would be over.

We would be separated no longer.

Fate would smile down upon us, in congratulations. 

Until then, though,

I’ll look into every doorway,

meet every friend I can,

and stay hopeful.

One of these days, I’ll see that pink string.

I’ll be at peace.

‘Soulmates’ will always find each other eventually.
